March against unemployment

At the decision of the municipality of Patras, the country's 4th largest city, whose mayor is the communist Kostas Peletidis, a march was organized that began in Patras passing through many other towns en route where events were organized to welcome the demonstrators, and ended 8 days later on Sunday the 10th of April in the centre of Athens, outside the Greek parliament. The purpose of the march was to highlight the issue of unemployment, which affects every family from the popular strata in Greece, and also to advance demands to support the unemployed and their families and for mass hiring in the health and education sector, in the municipalities etc.

Thousands of people participated in the march, while after the call of PAME, trade unions, People's Committees of Athens, municipalities headed by communist mayors, and other mass organizations, tens of thousands of people participated in the event to welcome the march in Athens. Afterwards there followed a well-attended concert.

Speaking at the rally outside the Greek parliament, the Mayor of Patras, Kostas Peletidis, stressed that "We marched so that the voice of the unemployed, the youth, of the workers with flexible labour relations, the workers with medieval labour relations, on three-month contracts, workers paid by the hour would be heard loud and clear. So that voice of the self-employed who are being bankrupted and the farmers who are being driven off the land would be heard loud and clear.Today every family from the popular strata has at least one unemployed member. In our municipality, on the basis of the data provided by OAED (the unemployment bureau), there are 29,230 unemployed. This is the reality of unemployment in our city today and the reason that we took this initiative". He added that:"After 8 days of marching and struggling from Patras to Athens, with our slogan "jobs for all, jobs with rights", we have reached Syntagma sq. in Athens. We are in front of the parliament, where they say that the decisions are taken.Anti-people decisions that reinforce those that possess the wealth, the monopolies, the ship owners, the bankers and crush those that create it.A short while ago, we handed over to the parliamentary groups of the parties (except of course the criminal-fascist organization of Golden Dawn) the decision of the Municipal Council of Patras and the demand for the hiring of staff on permanent contracts in the municipalities, the health and education sectors etc. and for measures to be taken to protect the unemployed and their families."

The Mayor of Patras made detailed reference to the difficult conditions and problems experienced by the workers, and to the responsibilities of the SYRIZA-ANEL government, the EU, the capitalist mode of production and the enormous issue of unemployment. He ended his speech by saying that:" Tomorrow we will continue  the just struggle for the realization of the demands to support the unemployed. No compromise, it is time for those that are making the people's lives hell to feel the pressure of the people's movement.Organization and struggle everywhere, fight against the anti-people political line of the EU, the bourgeois governments and monopolies. They are vehicles for the decline and regression of society.Their dominance blocks social progress. We have faith in the bottomless well of strength of the people's movement in our city and in our country and we are certain that in the end we will see smiles of joy on the faces of youth, workers and people. Our cause is just, we continue."

The GS of the CC of the KKE, Dimitris Koutsoumpas, also attended the rally in Syntagma sq.In his statement D.Koutsoumpas stressed:

"This rally tonight in Syntagma is not the end of the great march that began in Patras. It is the beginning of new mass and dynamic struggles against unemployment, for permanent and stable work, jobs with rights, protection for the unemployed, for the reversal of the anti-people political line as a whole."
